The Benefits of Games with the Elderly .
How Games help with Therapy in care settings for the Elderly:
Games are one form of an activity that can be done.
Games come in all different sorts of Guises, some are Physical, some mental, some Dexterous.
As you can see this covers a wide range of therapys.
How do we use games?
Look at your target audience's abilities.
If providing Quizes :-
- Try to offer a range that will give encoragement, but also some that will challenge.
- If a person or people are hard of hearing, try to group them together and then stand by them.
If this is not possible, move from one hard of hearing person to the next and repeat the question. - If you have someone who is unable to answer verbally, ask multiple answer questions and slow down in order to hear for a response.
- If you have one or two people in the group who are giving all the answers, start to aim questions at those who are not answering and ask those who have answered to allow the quieter ones to give an answer.
You must be careful as the ones not answering may be finding the questions too difficult which could have an adverse effect.
If providing Physical Games :-
- Again, Try to offer a range that will give encoragement, but also some that will challenge.
- If someone has a disability that makes it difficult to do a game, try to find a solution rather than leaving them out.
- Try to get the group interacting together, throw and catch across the room, Get them all to score games.
- Try to get a little light competition going.
